High Voltage Digital Galvanic Stimulator – High-Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) for Wound Healing, Edema Reduction & Pain Relief
The High Voltage Digital Galvanic Stimulator delivers High-Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) — a direct-current therapy that is distinct from the alternating current used in TENS and IFC units. Where TENS and IFC alternate current direction, galvanic stimulation applies a steady, one-directional (monophasic) current, creating an electrical field across the treated area that is theoretically able to influence local blood flow and fluid movement.
In practice, this means one pad behaves like ice and one behaves like heat: the positive pad is associated with reduced circulation and swelling in the treated area, while the negative pad is associated with increased circulation and, reportedly, faster tissue recovery.
This is the same technology class used clinically as HVPGS — a therapy that has become widely used for wound healing, edema reduction, and pain relief, with particular use in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Diabetic Foot management. Devices in this category are defined by a twin-peak monophasic waveform, an extremely short pulse duration (measured in microseconds), and therapeutic voltage above 100 volts.
That combination — short pulse duration, high peak current, but very low total current per second (microcurrent) — is what makes high-voltage stimulation comfortable rather than jarring, while still efficiently exciting sensory, motor, and pain-conducting nerve fibers.

What Makes HVPGS Different From TENS & IFC?
Most home electrotherapy units — TENS and IFC — use alternating current at relatively low voltage. Skin naturally resists the flow of electrical current, and when current passes through a resistor like skin, voltage is lost and energy dissipates as heat before it ever reaches deeper tissue.
High-voltage stimulation takes a different approach:
- Direct current, not alternating — creates a directional electrical field rather than an oscillating one
- Voltage above 100V — high enough to produce a spontaneous, momentary breakdown in skin resistance
- Microsecond pulse duration — keeps total current per second (microcurrent) low despite the high voltage
- Negligible thermal effect — current passes through the skin with minimal heat or electrochemical irritation, unlike traditional low-voltage units
The result is a modality capable of reaching deeper tissue comfortably — something low-voltage TENS and IFC devices aren't designed to do.

HRE Expert Perspective
At Home Rehab Equipment, we point patients toward the High Voltage Digital Galvanic Stimulator specifically when a provider has prescribed HVPGS rather than standard TENS or IFC — most often for acute swelling, wound care support, or conditions like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Diabetic Foot where deeper, more targeted stimulation is called for.
Because this device requires a prescription, we always recommend confirming your electrode placement and treatment protocol with your physician or physical therapist before your first session — the placement guide included in the box is a helpful reference, but it isn't a substitute for your provider's specific instructions.
How High-Voltage Galvanic Stimulation Works
High-voltage pulsed galvanic stimulation isn't new technology — it dates back to Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1945, when researchers found that shortening pulse duration while increasing voltage let them stimulate deep tissue without causing tissue damage. The first published research on its effectiveness, in wound healing of animal limbs, appeared in 1966. Decades of clinical use have followed, particularly in wound care, edema management, and pain relief.
In practice, the two pads behave differently:
- Positive pad — acts like ice, associated with reduced circulation and reduced swelling in the treated area
- Negative pad — acts like heat, associated with increased circulation and, reportedly, faster healing
Because the device operates at high voltage but very low total current, it produces a temporary, spontaneous breakdown in skin resistance — allowing current to pass through with negligible thermal or electrochemical effects, unlike traditional low-voltage stimulators.
How to Use the High Voltage Digital Galvanic Stimulator
- Confirm your treatment protocol, electrode placement, and settings with your prescribing physician or physical therapist.
- Place the dispersive and active electrodes according to your provider's instructions and the included placement guide.
- Power the unit using the 9V battery or AC adaptor.
- Set your channel(s), adjust pulse rate (1–120 Hz) and output voltage to the level directed by your provider.
- Select Continuous or Alternating mode as prescribed.
- Begin your session, monitoring comfort throughout, and store the unit in the included carrying case afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a prescription for this device?
Yes. A prescription from your physician or physical therapist is required to purchase and use this device.
What is HVPGS?
High-Voltage Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation (HVPGS) is a direct-current electrotherapy that uses a twin-peak monophasic waveform, very short (microsecond) pulse duration, and voltage above 100V to stimulate tissue comfortably at low total current.
How is this different from a TENS or IFC unit?
TENS and IFC units use alternating current at lower voltage. This device uses high-voltage direct current, which creates a directional electrical field and can produce a spontaneous, temporary reduction in skin resistance — allowing deeper, more comfortable stimulation.
What conditions is this used for?
Common uses include muscle soreness, muscle stiffness, arthritis, body pain, post-op pain, post-traumatic acute pain, chronic pain, wound healing, edema reduction, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Diabetic Foot.
How does the positive vs. negative pad work?
The positive pad behaves like ice — reducing circulation and swelling in the treated area. The negative pad behaves like heat — increasing circulation and reportedly supporting faster healing.
What power source does it use?
The unit runs on a 9V battery or an included AC adaptor.
What's included in the box?
Four reusable electrode pads, lead wires, batteries, a user manual with electrode placement guide, and a carrying case.
What's the warranty?
The device comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty.
Is this safe to use without supervision?
This is a prescription device. Always follow your physician's or physical therapist's specific instructions for placement, settings, and session length.
